This is my 25th July 4th in this United States! And yet, we rarely do anything special on the 4th! I wonder why? Perhaps it is because we were usually overseas in Europe in June/July so we either were not stateside on the 4th or have just returned from a long trip and have absolutely no desire to do anything except to relax at home.
I remember only one very special July 4th, that was in 2005! We were invited to our very first ballgame - baseball at the Dodger's Stadium. We were advised to get to the stadium early to avoid being caught bumper to bumper on the freeway. So we arrived at about 5:30 pm, I think the game began close the 7:00 pm. We watched the stadium seats completely filled with spectators as the evening progressed. At the end of the game, because it was the 4th of July, the spectators were permitted to go onto the field, set up their picnic blankets to watch the fireworks. Because our friends had a private booth, the fireworks was even more spectacular - it was at eye level and just incredible to see the burst of colors in the night sky up close.
The ball game experience was definitely a memorable event because our friends had a private booth behind the batter - great location to watch the game and the most beautiful sight was watching night fall and the lights of the stadium lit up.
There was a period in the late 80s when we used to go to the Hollywood Bowl for the summer concerts. We'd time it for the evenings when they have fireworks display at the end of the evening. So, in addition to the wonderful musical performance, we'd be treated also to spectacular fireworks accompanied by the orchestra. That was another good memory of events in July.
I would love one year to be at the Capitol for July 4th - enjoy the orchestra on the lawn in front of the Capitol Building and fireworks after that.

A belated happy 4th of July! I wish we had a celebratory day like that here in the UK.
Thanks Pootle! 4th is another one of our fav public hols! I watched on TV the Macy's fireworks in New York and the Boston Pops fireworks in Boston - enjoyed both thoroughly! My H said perhaps next year we should see one of them in person : ) : ) - that would be nice if we can pencil it in for next year!
You have Guy Fawkes day which is similar in that you have fun with bonfires and fireworks : ) : )

Bonfire night is not really quite the same... it's not a holiday, for starters. But it is fun, and the fireworks are great, though possibly more low-key and local (not necessarily a bad thing).
Hope you get to see the New York or Boston fireworks next year!
